"Carol," "Trainwreck," "Mr. Robot" Among 2016 Golden Globe Nominees

The supremely talented trio of Angela Bassett, America Ferrera and Chloë Grace Moretz took turns announcing the 2016 Golden Globe nominees this morning at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Several of the Oscar season's most buzzed-about titles were included, though their categorization is guaranteed to revive the annual debates regarding what constitutes a comedy or a drama.

Two pure comedies, Paul Feig's "Spy" and Judd Apatow's "Trainwreck," were nominated in the Best Motion Picture—Comedy category alongside three films comprised of considerably more dramatic fare: Adam McKay's exploration of the modern financial crisis, "The Big Short," David O. Russell's profile of an entrepreneur, "Joy," and  Ridley Scott's sci-fi adventure, "The Martian." The category of Best Motion Picture—Drama was easier to predict, favoring such critical darlings as Todd Haynes's "Carol," George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road" (which many viewers would consider quite comedic), Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant" and Todd McCarthy's "Spotlight." Perhaps the biggest victor here is Lenny Abrahamson's claustrophobic thriller, "Room," which was also nominated for Best Actress (Brie Larson) and Screenplay (Emma Donoghue), boding well for its Oscar chances.

On the TV front, FOX's "Empire" and USA's "Mr. Robot" scored nominations for Best TV Series—Drama, alongside HBO's "Game of Thrones," Netflix's "Narcos" and STARZ's "Outlander." The Best TV Series—Comedy category was stretched slightly to make room for six nominees: Hulu's "Casual," Amazon's "Mozart in the Jungle," Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," Amazon's "Transparent," and HBO's dynamic duo of "Silicon Valley" and "Veep."

Host Ricky Gervais will be presiding over the 2016 Golden Globes telecast on Sunday, January 10th. See below for the complete list of nominees.
