“The Shape of Water” Leads the 2018 Golden Globe Nominees

Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is the clear front-runner at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards, which released its official list of nominees live this morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The fantastical romance earned a total of seven nods including Best Picture - Drama, Best Director and Best Actress - Drama (Sally Hawkins). Tying for second place with six nods apiece are Martin McDonagh's seriocomic drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg's timely thriller about press censorship, “The Post.” HBO's Emmy-winning miniseries, “Big Little Lies,” which was just picked up for a second season, is sure to sweep the TV accolades, where it is nominated for six prizes including Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Another Emmy favorite, Hulu's “The Handmaid's Tale,” tied with FX's “Fargo” and NBC's “This Is Us,” each earning three nods.

One of the most egregious snubs was the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category, despite the fact that Greta Gerwig's “Lady Bird” is the frontrunner in the Best Picture - Musical or Comedy category. Ridley Scott's fact-based drama, “All The Money in the World,” a film plagued with last-minute reshoots, failed to receive a Best Picture nomination, but nevertheless scored a Best Director nod, pitting Scott against de Toro, McDonagh, Spielberg and Christopher Nolan (for “Dunkirk”).

The nominees were announced today by presenters Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell, and Sharon Stone, as well as Golden Globe ambassador Simone Garcia Johnson, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Meher Tatna, and executive vice president of television at Dick Clark Productions Barry Adelman. Seth Meyers will host the Golden Globes telecast airing Sunday, January 7th, at 7pm CST on NBC.
