Ebert nailed “Crash” exactly: It is, if you look deeply enough, about progress. Having just seen it, I cannot believe how profoundly it affected me. It was heartbreaking to see myself in it in spots: the unthinking assumptions, the hurt, the fear. But these characters, most of them, learned and ended wiser. While I find that Mr. Ebert is usually right about movies, his review was dead on, and it is the main reason I wanted to see the movie in the first place. He has made a difference by pointing me to something that challenged my heart.
I wish two things for this movie: that they would cut a lot of the f-word; and that everyone in America would be chained to a chair with their eyes taped open and forced to watch it.
OK. I’m a prude, but my heart’s in the right place.
