Wormwood

A fascinating piece of filmmaking that challenges the form in new ways as it recalls themes its director has been interested in his entire career.

The Trouble with the Truth

Ezra Pound also wrote a poem about the Lake Isle of Innisfree. And shared a cottage with Yeats.

Spoken Word writes on his wonderful Spoken Verse.com: . Ezra Pound shared a cottage with W B Yeats during a period of three years. It seems that he didn't share Yeats' ambition to end up living alone on an island in the middle of a lake.

The title refers to Yeats' poem "The Lake Isle of Innisfree. McHugh and I drove out there from Sligo, but your man who lived in the cottage on this shore didn't feel like rowing us out.

"Volailles" actually means "chickens," if we ]take it literally, but here it means whores. "Poules" is similar and it also means both chickens and whores. There was a delightful film called Irma la Douce with Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon set in the seedy part of Paris populated mainly with the Poules, their Mecs and the Flics - meaning the Prostitutes, their Pimps and the Cops. And, if you haven't seen Irma La Douce here it is - just watch the opening few minutes and you'll be hooked--er, yes, "hooked" is appropriate:.

The first tobacconist is in 'Little Britain' : Government Street, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

The second tobacco shop is in Old Town. San Diego, California, USA.

O GOD, O Venus, O Mercury, patron of thieves, Give me in due time, I beseech you, a little tobacco-shop, With the little bright boxes piled up neatly upon the shelves And the loose fragrant cavendish and the shag, And the bright Virginia loose under the bright glass cases, And a pair of scales not too greasy, And the volailles dropping in for a word or two in passing, For a flip word, and to tidy their hair a bit.

O God, O Venus, O Mercury, patron of thieves, Lend me a little tobacco-shop, or install me in any profession Save this damn'd profession of writing, where one needs one's brains all the time.

The President of Ireland eviscerates Tea Partiers as ignorant wankers

Primary mike thumb 510x305 58381

Higgins was at the University of Illinois when I was. This rant has gone viral with over 2,000,00 hits. Here is an article.

Plunging into a debate, he suggests Ireland has not yet been defeated by Political Correctness. And to the degree I know Ireland in the wake of several trips there with my best friend McHugh, it never will be. There are a great many ignorant wankers in the US who need to be called out, and a lamentable shortage of politicians with the balls to do so.

Thanks for the link to John McHugh, born and raised in County Sligo, educated at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Time travel movies in a surreal universe

This animation is explained in this New Scientist article. I remain incapable of encompassing additional dimensions, and wonder if in fact they exist only in math. I'm assured they exist, and are necessary. If they did not exist, I would not exist. I Exist, Therefore They Am.

This is where it gets me: The film visualizes Earth seen from Above in this brave new universe. IS there an Above? Where (and When) are we viewing it from?

"Sheep, Galloway, Sheep!" Paul Galloway, a beloved legend

Primary paultop thumb 490x621 58275

We will never hear the Sheep Story again. Nor will we enjoy his presence in a room, which was an invitation to good cheer. Paul Galloway, the most incomparable raconteur I ever met in a newsroom, is dead. Everyone who knew him will know what a silence that creates.

I loved the guy. I introduced him to his wife, Maggie. I couldn't see enough of them. It will be impossible to share with you the joy of his company, but I am going to try. Let others write the formal obituaries. All I know is, Paul died at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, at their "winter home" in Tulsa, Okla. There's a Winter Home Story. With Paul, there was a story about everything. He was somewhere in his 70s. When you get to be our age, "somewhere" is close enough.

Weaker at the broken places

They are two people accustomed to ruling their physical domains with muscle, sex and beauty. They don't ask themselves a lot of questions about what could stand some improvement in their inner lives. They will rely the powers given them. Ali is powerfully-built and roughly handsome. He dreams of becoming a champion of mixed martial arts fighting. At present he is a nightclub bouncer, firmly exercising control over the hopefuls swimming out of the night. Stéphanie is a trainer at a seaquarium, using body language and dead fish to command a tank filled with whales to rise up from the water. They live near Cannes, celebrated for launching more successful people up a red carpet.

I can hardly believe I didn't know that Werner Herzog starred in an episode of "Boondocks." This link was sent to me by a reader. Is that Herzog's own voice. It sounds real to me. In any event, Herzog's precise and implacable narration is essential here, and The Voice is the medium as well as The Message in his documentaries.
