From Nikhil Iyer, Hoffman Estates, IL:
The last few years have seen a surge in the interest in Bollywood. But there seems to be a stereotype process. Bollywood comes of age every few months when you see a movie worth dying for and then it goes back to the recesses of fun frolic and dance. As an avid Bollywood fan. I recommend that people go back and look at some offbeat movies. Movies which lack the song and dance routine but are not short on essence. They may adapt some popular storyline from Hollywood but it is Bollywood to the core. They do not make big bucks as they do not conform to the escapist cinema that normal Bollywood ascribes to.
In 2008 I would recommend:
“Dasvidaniya”
Bucket list take for a normal office goer which is both humorous and emotional
“Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!”
The story of a small time crook in Northern India
“A Wednesday”
Story of a common man’s desperation against terrorists
“Aamir”
A Bollywood take and scenario on a Filipino (I think) movie with a terrorist plot
