When I went in search of a Black entrepreneur to highlight for Juneteenth, I needed to look no further than our former IT guy, Myrin New, who also happens to be my cousin. I caught up with him to talk about his recent milestone moment, the brands he’s quietly scaling behind the scenes, and what it really takes to stay consistent when you’re doing it solo.

Congratulations on the confirmation of your federal trademark for your company, MyNew Technologies. What did that moment represent for you?

Thank you. It meant everything, I found out it was finalized just days before my birthday in May. The registration was more than legal protection; it was validation of years of grit. I didn’t wait for a birthday gift, I built one. It confirmed to me that this thing is real, protected, and permanent

Looking back to the early days of MyNew Technologies, was there a moment when you realized this wasn’t just a side hustle anymore?

Yes, I started noticing a pattern. Whether I was working with companies or consulting independently I kept building repeatable solutions. It was no longer just about fixing things. It became about creating frameworks that could be applied again and again. That’s when it clicked. This isn’t just a “one and done” thing, it’s scalable. I would say that was the turning point.

You work full time for someone else as you continue to build your tech ecosystem from the ground up. That’s a big lift. How do you find the time to do it all?

Structure. Intention. Relentless execution. I don’t have a co-founder or a venture capital safety net. I rely on systems, discipline and vision. My workdays end around 5pm and then my second shift begins at MyNew Technologies.

You aren’t just running one brand either, tell us about the full lineup.

Yes, I’m building an entire network of digital properties. I’m not just focused on one brand or serving one community. Currently my two most developed are Sober Group, a digital platform supporting addiction recovery through infrastructure not treatment, and NetworkXConnect, a space for community, mental wellness and public service collaboration. Each one is purpose driven, audience focused and deeply technical.

You built this ecosystem solo. What’s something you’ve learned about yourself along the way?

That perfection is overrated, and consistency is everything. Not every project popped, some flopped hard while others surprised me. But what mattered most was that I kept showing up.

A lot of entrepreneurs believe they need a co-founder or external funding to go big, what’s your take on that?

That’s the biggest myth in the game. I’ve played every role: CEO, CTO, product manager, customer support, you name it. But with automation, strategy, and a high output mindset, it’s possible. Too many people wait. I don’t wait; I build.

What’s new for MyNew Technologies?

AI integration across all digital properties. Subscription forums. AI powered tools. Possibly licensing our infrastructure to social impact orgs. And mentoring builders who think they’re too busy to start because guess what, we’re all busy. But when you treat your dream like a business, and your time like capital then anything becomes buildable.

When I look around and see what I consider tech unicorns, people who start small and sell or scale their companies into the multi-million-dollar range, I don’t see many Black unicorns. Do you aspire to that?

Of course, but I’d put it a little differently. I don’t only want to be a Black tech unicorn. I already think, plan, and act like one. My business models under MyNew Technologies umbrella is made to grow, automate, and solve problems in a way that can have a huge effect, worth millions of dollars.

The difference is that my idea of success isn’t just about how much money I can make. It’s about making systems that help entrepreneurs who aren’t well-known, and making technology that solves actual problems, like how people work from anywhere, how they keep their digital lives safe, and how they make money from their skills.

I want to create frameworks that other people can use, and I’m also teaching them along the way. That multiplying effect is like a unicorn to me.

Do I want the contract worth nine figures? Of course. But what I really want is a legacy where people can say, “Myrin New helped us see what we could do with technology.”

That’s bigger than any buyout.
