On the final day of Cannes 2019, we held our annual Critics Roundtable featuring an overview of the festival from our contributors Ben Kenigsberg of The New York Times, Lisa Nesselson of France24TV/Screen International and Jason Gorber of thatshelf.com. They discuss many of their favorite selections, starting with the one that eventually won the Palme d’Or, Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite.” Other highlights singled out by the trio include Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady On Fire” and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory.” Nesselson also shares the empowering words of this year’s young prize-winning cinematographer, Modhura Palit, while Gorber explains how Abdellatif Kechiche’s widely derided “Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo” weaponizes tedium.
